Independent jewellery retailers are under increasing pressure to modernise, but replacing ageing systems is only part of the challenge. A new website or stock platform may provide the technical foundation, but retailers still need product photography, catalogue management, search optimisation, repairs, merchandising and digital marketing to turn that technology into measurable sales.

Stockbox believes the industry needs both.

Following a successful rollout with independent retailers during 2025–26, the retail technology company is expanding across the UK and Ireland. Its proposition combines a cloud-based retail platform with access to the practical expertise required to build and operate a successful ecommerce business.

Built Inside a Working Jewellery Business

Stockbox did not begin as a conventional software start-up.

The platform was developed inside The Diamond Box, a third-generation family jewellery business that spent more than six years creating a bespoke system for its own retail operation.

Alongside improvements to ecommerce and internal processes, the technology helped support The Diamond Box’s growth from approximately £2 million to £12 million in annual turnover across its physical and online channels.

That experience became the foundation for Stockbox, which was subsequently established as an independent software company with its own team of developers, ecommerce specialists and support professionals.

Rather than developing software around assumptions about jewellery retail, the platform was shaped by the daily realities of operating a jewellery business: managing unique products, controlling stock across multiple sales channels and presenting valuable inventory effectively online.

More Than a Software Login

The decision to bring the platform to the wider market was driven by Mike Viney, Chief Commercial Officer at Stockbox.

Viney’s career has included jewellery retail, trade publishing, exhibitions and the pre-owned watch market. Across those areas, he saw independent businesses facing the same problem: technology was becoming increasingly important, but many retailers lacked the internal resources needed to make it work.

“What we didn’t want to do was give a retailer a new system, hand them the login details and leave them to do the heavy lifting to make it a success,”

This distinction sits at the centre of the Stockbox proposition.

Retailers can use the platform independently, but they can also access services including product photography, image editing, catalogue creation, ecommerce onboarding, SEO, digital advertising, repairs and merchandising.

For many independents, that could remove the need to recruit several different specialists or coordinate multiple agencies and suppliers.

It could also help businesses unlock value from stock they already own.

Viney points to pieces sitting behind the counter, overlooked items in a safe or parcels originally purchased for scrap. With the right refurbishment, photography, product information and online presentation, that inventory could be repositioned as commercially valuable retail stock.

Connecting Physical and Digital Stock

Every Stockbox subscription includes a hosted ecommerce website connected directly to the retailer’s live stock system.

Inventory can be synchronised across the website and connected sales channels, reducing manual administration and helping to prevent the same item being sold more than once.

That is particularly relevant to jewellery and watches, where products are frequently unique, one-off or difficult to replace.

Disconnected systems can create significant operational risk. Staff may need to update several platforms manually, remove sold products individually or check physical availability before confirming an online order.

Stockbox aims to create a single, connected view of inventory while allowing retailers to decide how much additional support they require.

Designed for Continuous Development

Unlike many legacy retail systems that have developed gradually over several decades, Stockbox was created as a cloud-native platform.

This allows its team to continue developing functionality and integrations as retail requirements evolve.

The distinction matters because ecommerce is no longer a separate part of a jewellery business. Product information, stock control, customer experience, photography, digital marketing and physical retail increasingly need to operate as one connected ecosystem.

Technology alone cannot create that connection if the underlying processes and product content are missing. Equally, strong photography and marketing cannot compensate for inaccurate stock information or fragmented systems.

Stockbox is attempting to address both sides of that equation.

Why This Matters for Independent Retailers

Independent jewellers are expected to deliver increasingly sophisticated digital experiences while continuing to provide the expertise, trust and personal service associated with physical jewellery retail.

Larger businesses can employ dedicated teams for ecommerce, content, photography, digital marketing and systems management. For a smaller independent, building that capability internally can be expensive and difficult to coordinate.

A platform supported by jewellery-specific operational expertise could offer a more accessible route to digital growth.

The strongest part of the Stockbox story is that the system was first tested inside a working family jewellery business. Its development was informed by real stock, real customers and real operational pressures rather than by a general retail template.

Its expansion across the UK and Ireland will now test whether that experience can be replicated successfully across a wider range of independent jewellery and watch businesses.

The Jewels Club Take

Jewellery retailers do not necessarily need more technology. They need technology that understands how jewellery businesses operate, and the support to make that technology commercially effective.

Stockbox’s retailer-built background gives the platform an interesting point of difference. The growth of The Diamond Box provides a strong proof of concept, but its wider value will depend on how effectively the company can adapt that model to retailers with different stock profiles, teams and ambitions.

The principle is compelling: do not simply provide a platform and expect the retailer to solve everything else. Combine the system with the photography, repairs, merchandising, ecommerce and marketing expertise required to make it work.

For independent jewellers trying to modernise without building an entire digital department, that could prove to be a valuable proposition.
