There are few jewellery houses whose identity is so closely intertwined with craftsmanship as Buccellati. While many luxury brands speak of heritage, Buccellati continues to preserve techniques that have defined the Maison for more than a century.

Its latest high jewellery collection, Serenissima, is a celebration of that philosophy.

Drawing inspiration from Venice—known historically as La Serenissima—the collection pays tribute to one of Italy’s greatest artistic cities. From Renaissance architecture and Venetian lace to the traditions of Burano, every creation reflects the delicate balance between history, artistry and exceptional goldsmithing.

Rather than simply referencing Venice aesthetically, Buccellati translates its defining craftsmanship into jewellery. Intricate openwork, hand engraving and flowing lace-like forms transform precious metals into pieces that appear remarkably light despite their extraordinary complexity.

The art of turning gold into lace

For Buccellati, lace has long been more than decoration.

Founder Mario Buccellati was fascinated by the delicate needle lace produced on the Venetian island of Burano and sought to recreate its transparency and softness using gold rather than thread. Serenissima represents perhaps the most complete expression of that vision to date.

The collection showcases the Maison’s celebrated openwork techniques, where gold sheets are meticulously pierced by hand before being refined cell by cell using traditional saws. The result is jewellery that resembles fine embroidered fabric resting against the skin.

Every detail is enhanced using historic Renaissance engraving methods that Buccellati continues to preserve, including Modellato, Rigato and mirror-polished colpi di lucido finishes. Together, they create remarkable depth, texture and movement across each jewel.

Techniques passed through generations

Among the defining characteristics of Serenissima is Buccellati’s famous Honeycomb openwork.

Developed by Mario Buccellati and refined over generations, the painstaking process involves creating hundreds of tiny geometric openings by hand, with every individual cell repeatedly reworked to achieve perfect symmetry. It remains one of the Maison’s most recognisable signatures and one of the most labour-intensive techniques in high jewellery today.

Alongside Honeycomb sits the Radial Honeycomb variation, inspired by the rose windows of Renaissance churches, while delicate lace-inspired motifs reference the intricate embroidery traditions that have long defined Venetian craftsmanship.

A collection inspired by the colours of Venice

Serenissima combines these technical achievements with exceptional gemstones.

Across the collection, white and yellow gold provide the canvas for diamonds, sapphires, emeralds, aquamarines, tourmalines and tanzanites, while several creations feature elaborate combinations of rose-cut, brilliant-cut and fancy-cut diamonds. The collection includes striking necklaces, dramatic bracelets, sculptural rings and elegant earrings, each demonstrating the Maison’s unmistakable balance of delicacy and architectural precision.

The overall effect is unmistakably Buccellati—high jewellery that feels both historic and contemporary, where technical mastery quietly takes centre stage.

A tribute to La Serenissima

Andrea Buccellati, Honorary President and Creative Director of the Maison, said:

“With ‘Serenissima’, we wanted to capture the soul of Venice, its magic and its millennia-old history. Each jewel is a fragment of this extraordinary city, a tribute to its light, to its art that has shaped entire eras and to its ability to enchant. It is a dialogue between our goldsmithing tradition and the eternal beauty of Venice, an expression of our passion for excellence and art that merges with the splendour of the Serenissima Republic.”

Andrea Buccellati, Honorary President and Creative Director

His words perfectly encapsulate the collection’s purpose. Rather than chasing contemporary trends, Serenissima reinforces the values that have defined Buccellati for generations—craftsmanship, patience and artistic excellence.

The Jewels Club Take

Many high jewellery collections celebrate extraordinary gemstones. Buccellati’s Serenissima instead reminds us that craftsmanship itself can be the greatest luxury.

By drawing inspiration from Venice’s lace-making traditions and preserving techniques that few maisons still practise, Buccellati has created a collection that feels deeply authentic. In an era increasingly driven by speed and novelty, Serenissima stands as a powerful example of why true artisanal excellence continues to define the very highest level of jewellery.
